Flinn Scientific sells a kit which contains most of the organic solvents necessary for our GC experiments in Gas Chromatography Investigations with the Mini GC. (See table below.)
Organic Solvents for GC Analysis Kit, Catalog No. AP7480.
If you have the first edition of this lab book, please contact Vernier for a complete list of substances used in that book.
All of the substances used in Gas Chromatography Investigations with the Mini GC can also be purchased from a chemical supply company, such as Sigma Aldrich.
The table below lists the substances and their CAS numbers.
Substance 1 | Experiment | CAS No.2 | Flinn? | Sigma? |
---|---|---|---|---|
acetone | 2-4 | 67-64-1 | yes | yes |
2-butanone, or methyl ethyl ketone | 1, 3, 5 | 78-93-3 | yes | yes |
2-pentanone | 3 | 107-87-9 | yes | yes |
4-methyl-2-pentanone | 1, 3, 5 | 108-10-1 | yes | yes |
methanol | 1, 5 | 67-56-1 | yes | yes |

butyl acetate | 1, 4, 5 | 123-86-4 | kit only | yes |
- With the exception of 95% ethanol, all the substances listed above should be reagent grade or analytical grade, containing no water.
- The CAS number is a registry identification number for a compound. It is compiled and maintained by CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society.
Note: Butyl acetate and propyl acetate are available from Flinn only as part of the kit called “Organic Solvents for GC Analysis†(Flinn order code: AP7480).
