Vernier sensors are intended for use in education. The Go Direct Respiration Belt has not been reviewed, certified, or approved by the FDA or similar organizations outside the United States for use with patients or clinical purposes. This product should not be used for any diagnosis, treatment or other medical decision-making purposes.Â
The Go Direct Respiration Belt is not appropriate for recording breathing patterns over long periods, such as monitoring intermittent periods of apnea while sleeping. The sensor does not have the ability to store sensor data to the device internally and must be used with Graphical Analysis using a PC, Mac, Chromebook or mobile device or a LabQuest 2, or 3 to collect data. If you are interested in recording physiological events for extended periods of time, please see the BioRadio at Great Lakes Neurotech which appears to support remote data recording. This device may be more appropriate for long term physiological monitoring.
The Go Direct Respiration Belt is designed for classroom use and may not work for any experiment lasting longer than 20-30 minutes. We cannot provide more accurate estimates of the duration for the longest possible experiment because the sensor can be used over both USB and BLE. There are also likely different rates / durations that can be supported using Graphical Analysis on different platforms (Android, iOS, Chrome, Mac, PC). The best way to optimize performance is to use the USB cable, and to use it on a standard computer (Mac or PC).
Once again, the Go Direct Respiration Belt (GDX-RB) was designed for classroom use. It is a great product for students to investigate breathing patterns during short term activities (ex. before and after breath holding, before and after exercise). The Go Direct Respiration Belt is not suitable for use with reclining or sleeping subjects and it is not recommended for any type of medical research or clinical use. It is not appropriate for sleep studies and it is not suitable for recording data for long time periods (hours). Please be advised that it is not an approved FDA medical device.
The default data collection rate for the Go Direct Respiration Belt (10 samples/s) may be too fast for student experiments that last longer than 10-15 minutes. For students wanting to try longer periods of data collection in the classroom try the following:
- Reduce the sampling rate to 5 samples/s. This may work for experiments lasting as long as 20-30 minutes.
- Turn off the Force channel. The Force channel does not need to be active for the sensor to record respiration rate. You will not be able to see Force (respiration effort), but respiration rate should still be calculated. Do not change the default sampling rate. Please note that the sensor may still not be able to record respiration rates for longer than 20-30 minutes.
The Go Direct Respiration Belt can be used with other software platforms such as Java Script and Python. Limitations on recording duration using these platforms is unknown. Please see our College Engineering webpage if you are interested in using this product with other software platforms.
