Introduction

The magnitude of instantaneous velocity of an object is always the same as its instantaneous speed. But, if we compare the average speed of an object to the magnitude of its average velocity things are not always so simple.

Objectives

In this activity, you will

  • Use Logger Pro video analysis tools to figure out why, even in the case of one-dimensional motion, the magnitude of the average velocity, \left| {\left\langle {{v_{\text{x}}}} \right\rangle } \right|, of an object moving along a line is not always the same as its average speed, \left\langle {\left| {{v_{\text{x}}}} \right|} \right\rangle.
