If you have a computer that does not have a serial port, there are a few options available for getting your ULI to work with it. Note that we newer USB interface options, such as LabQuest, LabQuest Mini, LabQuest Stream, and Go! Link , which do not need an adapter, as they have built-in USB support. In most cases, it is less expensive to get adapters for the sensors you already own and buy a new interface. This is often more reliable, and lets you use the current version of Logger Pro.
If your new computers are desktops (instead of laptops), you could buy a card that would be inserted into your computer to give it a “real” serial port instead of an emulated serial port, like the Keyspan. If this is an option for you, it is much better choice than a serial port emulator.
Preliminary testing shows that a “Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter”, Part #USA-19HS ~$39, works well with Logger Pro 2.2.1 and Spectro Pro 1.0+. This adapter replaces Keyspan adapter #USA-19W and USA-19QW that also work well but are no longer available.
NOTE: No USB/Serial adapter works for the Serial Box Interface and Windows 2000, XP, or Vista. The least expensive replacement is to get a Go! Link interface and DIN-BTA adapters.
NOTE: The last version of Logger Pro software to support the ULI, Serial Box, and LabPro interface is version 2.2.1. Logger Pro 3.x will only work with the newer interfaces, including LabPro and Go! devices. Logger Pro 3 will not work with the ULI or Serial Box Interface.
The latest Keyspan driver for the adapter must be installed. Downloads of the drivers can be found at www.keyspan.com. To download, choose downloads from the menu and select the appropriate adapter. Upon installation, the driver automatically assigns the adapter to the next available COM port. The only possible problem might be if there are already devices assigned to COM 1, COM 2, COM 3, and COM 4. If the next available port is COM 5 or greater, Logger Pro or Spectro Pro will not be able to use the adapter since Logger Pro and Spectro Pro only recognize COM 1 through COM
4.To determine which COM port has been assigned to the adapter, go to the Device Manager. This can be found on the Control Panel under System and expand the list under Ports. The Keyspan high speed COM port will be listed along with the COM port number assigned to it. This COM port should be the one selected to scan when setting up an interface in Logger Pro.
